Is there a family that hasn’t been devastated by cancer? I don’t believe so. I was 22 years old when my mother was diagnosed with breast cancer; she passed away 10 years later. In 2007, my husband, Jim, died only 6 months after being diagnosed with kidney cancer. He was 56 years old. And in 2013 … my father, of colon cancer. I am paddling in honor of my late husband Jim Malehorn, my mother, Ruth Esser, my father, Frank Esser, and all those affected by cancer.
